From Utah
Until today our pumping breastfeeding mothers have had one free meal per day and rooming in was also free
Now there is a cost to room in and the meals are not free. We now provide fridge in our rooming in rooms so that mothers can home food in their room as well as snacks.
What has helped the most to keep mom's pumping is "you go girl" praise - support - skin to skin and encouraging mothers to continue to provide "medicine' for their baby - helping the mother know how critical mother's milk is. it is so important/benifical that we use Pas donor milk if you can't provide all that your baby needs.
The cost for donor milk was justified by prevention of ONE case of surgical NEC - we found NEC increased the cost of care (from $125,00 to $250,000) and length of stay by 10 to 30 days. A low savings would pay for about 30,000 ounces of milk. S.Bedard MSN IBCLC
