When food has vitamins added it is because it has been processed and stripped of all nutritional value and vitamins needed to be added back in. Furthermore, the RDAs on nutrients are far too low, They are designed to prevent gross pathology, not support nutritional well-being. Furthermore, it is micronutrients, esp minerals that people are deficient in and most commercial products have poorly absorbed forms of vitamin added. My guess--like most Americans, she is getting far too few nutrients in her diet, not too many. But she is relying on the wrong sources if she thinks fortified foods and vitamins (esp if they are prescription) are going to keep her healthy. Cereal is highly-processed crap--it is not food. Food nourishes the body. It's like the difference between human milk and artificial milk--both might keep you alive--but only human milk allows for the infant to flourish. Processed foods will never allow us to flourish. I teach this very basic nutritional tenet to the moms in my group and the dietary changes I have seen are profound.
