Many women who went to the hospital I worked at were also the ones who
seemed to believe having a pump was as essential to breastfeeding as having
breasts. This includes the ones who were proud that they already had a Pump
in Style or Purely Yours even though they would be stay-at-home moms with no
specific plans to do any regular pumping!

In talking with moms individually as well as in breastfeeding class, I
always preceded any discussion of pumping with the recommendation that every
mother should know how to hand express. I admitted that women varied in how
efficiently they were able to do this and that there were many who found
that hand expression was just as easy and efficient as pumping. I mentioned
that even if mom was going to pump, it would help to hand express at least
to get the milk flow started, especially in able to give skin-to-skin
stimulation to the breasts and nipples. I also pointed out that in the
event of a power outage or being away from home and forgetting a pump part,
it was a great back-up. (We would have at least one person a week
frantically come in to the office needing to borrow or buy a part they had
left at home!)

By using this approach, every woman would accept at least a brief
description of hand expression even if she seemed totally averse to it
before we talked.
