Attention anybody using electronic medical records in the hospital
environment: I am interested in how you word the feeding question in
your documentation when moms are asked in L&D. Have run into
difficulties where moms say "breast AND bottle" where they mean they
will eventually bottlefeed when returning to work. Night nurses may
interpret this as a license to formula feed, or put formula on the cart.
This is definitely undermining. I know it's only part of the puzzle but
would like to know what others have done in their areas. Also - an idea
for putting this question that would apply to NICU moms also, whose
babies don't get to go to breast for a while. Too many times the NICU
record has infant feeding: NPO because the babies ARE NPO when admitted.

Just asking for some ideas.

Jane Kershaw
