Jo Anne cited a report about breast self exam supposedly not being
proven to be of any value. I am compelled to respond. As with any
such study, you have to remember that they are talking about
generalizations. I, for one, will continue to be a staunch
supporter of BSE ( or whatever you choose to call keeping familiar
with your body and any changes). In my case, I firmly believe that
it saved my life!!!!!! I discovered a grape-sized breast lump 6
months after a "clean" mammogram. It was cancer-fortunatley, there
was no sign of spread. I hate to think what the outcome would have
been at the next routine mammogram in another 6 months. Yes, a
mammogram, especially if there has been a baseline one in the past,
can catch smaller irregularities than even the most sensitive and
educated fingers can, but in between, it certainly doesn't hurt to
be aware of any changes.
