Pat says,

appropriate
weaning procedures are being taken BUT in no other specialty does the
specialist "stop" in on patients not requireing the specialist... >>

So if a breastfeeding mothers chooses to wean at x point in time, do we help
her wean appropriately and teach her how to feed formula correctly, or do we
just let her do her own thing and hope for the best? I think we have a
responsibility to babies -- and I'd like to think that I'm an infant feeding
specialist -- not JUST a lactation consultant. I do talk to mothers about
solid foods, and how to give them and when, and how to start them and when,
and so on. If a mother chooses to give formula when she is at work, or has to
supplement with formula, I have a responsibility to make sure she is doing it
in the best manner possible.

Now, I will agree with whomever said something about spreading yourself too
thin. There is a time factor in place here -- and I think the bf moms get our
time first. But if we can, and if we are paid for it (there's another issue),
then as a consultant concerned about the health of mothers and babies, and
knowing that I probably know more about feeding babies than most other heath
professionals, I do have a responsiblity here.

JMNSHO. It's an interesting discussion.
