Nikki says,

However, don't people receive get-well cards, and flowers after
hospitalization?
*****************************************
Yeah, they do -- but not generally from the hospital! In fact -- do we ever
get ANYTHING from the hospital other than a bill? Although, after my mother
had her triple bypass, her physicians gave her a teddy bear -- a "huggy bear"
to use for coughing and deep breathing. Closest I've ever seen to a gift from
the hospital to a patient other than in the OB department. Wouldn't you think
that the makers of Motrin or Advil would get on the bandwagon and have the
hospital give out samples and coupons? In a cute little leather pouch you could
put in your purse....

Anyway!!!! I'm not having any body parts removed -- at least not today.
None that I know of.... but I DID have a mammogram today..... first time at this
facility. And the tech actually asked me if I breastfed my babies. I was SO
excited! I've never been asked that before, though I do remember someone on
Lactnet recently posted that she had been asked. Granted, I haven't had a
mammogram in about 1 1/2 years, so maybe things have changed, but I was thrilled
that she asked.

The NEXT thing they need to do is figure out how many total
weeks/months/years each woman breastfed so they can begin to pin something down. She did say
the information went into a national data bank. Apparently this facility has
been asking the question for a long time because she's been a mammo tech for 20
years and was very surprised that I was surprised they asked!

Very nice. And then one other little thingy -- I was at the hospital getting
some blood work drawn and chatting with someone else about the new low carb
bread at the grocery store when she said, "Don't I know you?" I didn't have a
clue. After I told her my name, she said, "Of course! You taught the
breastfeeding class when I had my son here in August, 1983!" Now that was over 20
years ago and was before I was a lactation consultant (I shudder to think of
what I taught her). I'm amazed that someone would recognize me 20+ years later
-- remember my name and what our connection was. So I guess even if you think
you don't make an impression, breastfeeding is such an important part of our
lives that we do!
