Laurie,
You wrote that "the jury is also still out on the protective effects of
breastfeeding on asthma."

Maybe the jury feel asleep during deliberations or the judge got paid off.....
There is a biotech company called Agennix that has developed recombinant
human lactoferrin (based on research on human milk) that is in Phase II of human
clinical trials on using rhLF(recombinant human lactoferrin) in the treatment
of cancer, asthma, and diabetic foot ulcers. Agennix owns 73 patents and has
50 patents pending. Many of the board members of Agennix and its scientific
advisors are employed by Baylor College of Medicine. Many ex-oil people are
invested in this company.

So while we debate the "proof" of the protective effects of breastfeeding, a
biotech company will profit from selling drugs to prevent cancer, asthma based
on human milk and its "natural immunomodulatory protein."

One would suppose that a biotech company composed of many educated people
from Baylor College of Medicine would rely on evidence-based research to sell
their product. Just think of the money they have thrown away by owning all
those silly patents on human lactoferrin (123 patents and pending patents). Maybe
we should ask the NY Times to investigate this biotech company since there is
no evidence on the protective effects of breastfeeding and asthma.
