For what it's worth, I looked back over the last 15 years on medline and
couldn't find any reference to straws or any other kind of sucking for
post-op tonsillectomy patients. There was a couple of references to kids
doing just as well when allowed to pick their own foods out as when they
were restricted to a soft diet.
I know the surgeons here do restrict sucking on straws post-op.
Tonsillectomy is not done very often in kids under age 3, so breastfeeding
probably comes up pretty rarely for the average ENT. Perhaps the surgeon
could be asked for references (maybe they are present in ENT textbooks.)
Post-tonsillectomy hemorrage is not that uncommon, and can occur for days
after a tonsillectomy. It can require transfusion and has very rarely even
caused death. I'm guessing the ENT in question sure doesn't want to take
any chances, especially with a child this young.
