Cindy, there was a Lactnetter who did a study a couple of years ago on
re-using breastmilk after it had been warmed and baby had taken some from a
bottle. I will send you her study report. Below is a summary.

 What she discovered was that the antibacterial properties in breastmilk
*that has not been frozen* can be reused because any of baby's oral
bacteria that gets into the milk is destroyed. She didn't include
previously frozen milk in her study.

[A portion of unconsumed milk was examined as a control. Samples were taken
every 12 hours for bacterial analysis. Tests were performed to identify
total colony counts, pathogenic Staphylococci, coliforms and b-hemolytic
Streptococci. This study showed no significant difference between bottles
that were partially consumed and those that were not exposed to the baby’s
mouth for 5 out of 6 participants. All milk samples had colony counts in
the acceptable range of < 105 colony forming units per milliliter (CFU/ml).

This study showed high variability among participants, but no significant
difference between the quality or quantity of bacteria found in breastmilk
that has been partially consumed.

n a personal note this researcher, and mother, never throws breastmilk down
the drain. If there is any left over, I feel confident refrigerating the
milk for future feedings.]
