For Janet:

If you did experience bilateral mastitis in the first few weeks following
delivery, there is a theory that says it could be caused by a serious
bacteria (See R. Lawrence's book). I would then think that it probably was
the bacteria that kept the cracks on your nipples from healing. I would be
more likely to think that the mastitis caused the cracks in this case, and
not the cracks that brought on the mastitis as in most cases.
