Cathy thank you for writing what I've been thinking.  There is another 
Lactnetter I should thank for her amazingly well written post about how to be 
an ethical, non-marketing LC as well.  Both posts are incredibly informative.  

Here is my rather simplified version of the conundrum.  

If an LC is asked about "products that are safe" to use if nipples become 
irritated during breastfeeding that are easily available we are presented with 
two primary options Purple and Yellow.  Purple is owned by Pigeon, a non-code 
compliant company, but is marketed by Green, a code compliant company and 
endorsed by LLLI.  Yellow is owned and marketed by the Yellow company, 
which is non-code compliant.  In effect you are in a catch 22, if the mother 
insists that a "product" will make her feel better.  Ideally this doesn't happen, 
because the mother will see the value of improved latch and positioning and 
not feel a "need" for a product, but I think we have all been in situations 
where a sparkly bandaid suddenly takes the pain away.
