Yes, some formula brands have added long chain unsaturated fatty acids in
Europe. In fact, the original work by Lucas, published in the Lancet years
ago, was funded by industry; and the wide press coverage it obtained seems
to me to be only the pre-launching campaign for those products. The first
one in Spain was Milupa; I will remember forever the rep visiting me and
telling wonders: their formula was "enriched with a purified extract from
egg yolk coming from genetically engineered hens fed exclusively
spear-plume thistle" (not kidding, exact words as far as I can remember!).
He was also very proud because, "for the first timer in the formula
history, M*** has registered this industrial procedure, so if any other
company wants to add PUFA, they will have to pay royalties to us"
Last year, another (local) company also put PUFA in its formula (I do not
know if they are paying for the atomic hens or have engineered their own
monsters) They launched it with big media coverage, and we were invited to
participate in radio and TV programs that we then discovered had been
arranged by industry! They expected us, phanatics of bf, to say "breastfed
babies are more intelligent", so they can go after and say "but dont worry,
now with PUFAMILK..." But they were dissapointed, because we didn't say
that, and concentrated instead in speaking about positive messages (demand
feeding, "you can breastfed" and problem-solving).
IBFAN has been lobying in the EEC trying to get health claims in formula
forbidden. We think that, if a new ingredient is safe and useful for
babies, it should be mandatory in all formulas; and, if a new ingredient is
neither safe nor useful it should not be allowed. Telling the mothers "our
formula is better because it has XXX" when, in fact, there is no real
difference, is unethycal. Unfortunately, EEC said that industry spends lots
of money in research, and they should be allowed to recover it through
advertising, even if there is no real improvement.
In my opinion, even if there is a relationship between breast milk and IQ
(too many variables and too much industry money in this research), there is
no evidence that PUFA and only PUFA, among thousands of milk components,
most of them unknown, are responsible. I know of several studies showing
that breastfed babies have higher IQ at about 6 years; but no study, as far
as I know, shows that PUFA babies are as bright as bf ones, or brigther
than old formula babies.
So be careful about "the advantages of bf"; you can in fact be caught in a
new formula promotional campaign!
