In response to Ellen's post on the Mom with planned eye surgery, I agree
with Teresa V's response that she might want to wait due to changing vision
issues while recovering after pregnancy. And to add Dr. Jack's reply to
"stop breastfeeding" demands by health care practitioners, "Don't sacrifice
breastfeeding on the alter of ignorance." The meds mentioned in connection
with the surgery are eye meds, going into the eye only with limited systemic
absorption as long as the dosages are correct. As always, caution the Mom to
observe the baby closely after she (Mom) takes the meds and if there are any
untoward symptoms in baby (doubtful, IMO), report them to the pediatrician.

And in response to Marian Rigney's post asking why heat milk for premies for
30 minutes, I would say that slow heating (ie, in warm water) would best
preserve the maximum amount of the elements in breastmilk for which we would
be feeding premies, especially the live components. In the NICU's where I
have worked, it was a standard to heat breastmilk in a container of warm
water drawn from the tap. This was not "super-heated" water, just the
regular hot water tap. If the milk was frozen to begin with, you could plan
on just about 30 minutes to "take the chill off it".
