You said the baby is now "needing" formula - I would want to know who made
that determination, when the formula was started, and exactly how much
formula is now being given. I had one friend who "decided" her baby wasn't
getting enough (who knows why) and started offering a bottle after EVERY
feeding. Well, we all know where that goes... My friend would have
reported to anyone that her baby was breastfed, but the time between
feeding stretched longer (hmm, why? He's stuffed!) and I can't imagine he
was getting much breastmilk after just a few weeks of that routine. Can
you help the mom gradually wean off the formula? She'll also need a lot of
encouragement that gaining 8oz in a week is just fine, thank you, and
gently inform her that her own mother probably had initial difficulties
with latch, etc, and didn't have the fabulous support that she has (you),
and discount the possibility of a genetic milk insufficiency without
seeming to discredit the mom. plus - is grandma giving bottles and pushing
baby to finish them? Lots of factors here!
