LAM may not be "a full contraceptive measure", but may still be
(surprisingly) effective long after 6 mos. Details are also available in
the revised copy of The Breastfeeding Answer Book. If a mother is not
having periods she may still be protected; her choice of a
contraceptive, of course, depends on a number of factors, and since few
contraceptives are 100% effective, LAM's risk factor (which, indeed,
increases with the age of the baby and other things) may be a risk a
mother is willing to assume, especially since it is the only
contraceptive measure besides abstinence and rhythm or thermal/mucus to
be totally without side effects, and has such incredible additional
benefits.
Imagine marketing this:
- No cost involved. Continues to save you money just as BF does.- No
need to watch the calendar, clock, thermometer or mucus discharge. All
you have to do is watch your baby! - Use this method; it may increase BF
frequency and duration! - Method most effective with picky eaters and
frequent night-wakers (and twins).
Many mothers find that BF inhibits pregnancy for years, rather than
months.
