I have heard back from a couple of people that the elevated sodium might be a
lab error. It just doesn't fit into the picture.
The baby had a positive pnemogram and has been placed on caffeine. The neo
feels this is probably a transient problem and the baby will grow out of it
with the help of the caffeine.
In a couple weeks my boss and myself will try to get all the parities
involved with this case to do a chart audit. By doing this we hope to identify what
really was the problem and help us all in the future.
What is really sad, I will point this out to the group when we meet for the
audit, is that the parents feel responsible for the trouble their baby got
into. That the mother not feeding her baby enough in those few hours caused the
baby to get sick. What should be emphasized to these parents and others in
similar situations is that their observations that something was not right was so
helpful and quick medical attention was given to their baby with a good
outcome.
Whenever possible, doing chart audits may be helpful to many of us to help
understand and teach.
