>>And these bottles are expensive! It has a fairly complicated valve
system composed of several parts that of course need to be cleaned after
each use - not an easy system. I bought some for demo purposes for my
returning to work breastfeeding class and paid almost $15 for a package
of 3 (the only way they come) at Walmart.<<

I recently saw one for the first time while visiting Lynn Wolf, MOT,
OTR, IBCLC. I had spotted a grocery bag of bottles and nipples and
pacifiers in her office, and Lynn sat down with me and went through the
whole bag, patiently explaining the various points of each system. Among
other concepts I "got" for the first time was that rigid bottle systems
offer resistance to flow, while bag systems offer no resistance at all
and allow milk to pour out fast. In discussions of flow and such, it
isn't just about the nipple, but also about the bottle a nipple is
coupled with. Lynn liked the Dr. Brown bottle for some compromised
infants because of the moderation of the flow, among other things. By
the time she finished explaining it to me, I was impressed with it, too.
She readily acknowledged that it was expensive and hard to find, but she
keeps it in her "bag of tricks" when trying to match a baby with
suck/intake problems with a bottle that will help, not hinder, the
teaching efforts.
