Thanks very much for posting the thought-provoking quote from Madeleine
L'Engle's book.  I imagine if I'd lost several children (as used to be
common) I might have held back from becoming too attached--much the way
recently divorced people often have trouble letting down the barriers enough
to have new relationships. Of course, withholding intimacy and turning away
from breastfeeding led to more infant mortality/morbility ...  Sigh.
