This makes me shiver to recall, but here goes:
On a Phil Donahue show ages ago, there was a mom who called the health
department in FL to complaining of uterine contractions when
breastfeeding her newborn. The lady at the health dept. called Child
Protection Services complaining of sexual abuse. The authorities
removed the baby from the home and it took almost a YEAR to get her baby
back!!!! The lady was on the show, looking very much the "church lady"
and feels she did nothing wrong. I know several people from Florida
that are not surprised that could happen, but I haven't heard of a child
being removed from the home since. I furvently hope the USA has been
properly training health department personnel. I see breasfeeding
posters around ALL the WIC offices I've seen in 4 southern states.

Comments are one thing. But this type of overreaction to a
normal/natural bodily function is completely appauling. I worked with
the BF Coalition in Alabama when I was a student there 10 years ago.
They voices how difficult it is to even mention the word "breast" on the
radio or TV--then compair it to the flagarent sex shown on all the soap
operas. OH! Let me get off my soap box!!! It has gotten slightly
better over the past 10 years, but many of the women I know from
conservative religious backgrounds, don't even consider breatfeeding and
look at me like I've said a bad word! OH, help me find the courage to
be gentle and considerate.
