Hi All,
I have read this thread with interest as I have a friend who is nearly 50 and who is nursing her 18 mos old. She has recently been feeling reluctantly that she must wean. My recommendation was to nurse as long and she and the baby mutually desire and that I could think of no obvious health reasons for her to quit if she didn't want to.

There is one thing that I wonder about and that is bone mineralization post weaning. We know that women regain bone mass post weaning and I am no expert on menopause (yet!) but I understand that the ability to regenerate bone mass through menopause and beyond is severely diminished. So my concern is that if she goes into menopause while nursing should she expect any remineralization and if not will the years of nursing leave her with a net loss?

Fortunately for this mom the women in her family have tended to very late menopause so we hope that this will not be an issue for her.

Thanx for your help,
Janie Akerlund RN IBCLC
