I work in a public health office where lots of immunizations are done. As
far as I have read there would not be a contraindication to the vaccine
for the breastfeeding mother other than the possibility of the mother being
one of the very few who develop lesions. A small percent of that group will
be contagious; the concern is not knowing who of those with lesions are
contagious so all who develop lesions need to be considered contagious. And
just like with the actual disease you are contagious before any lesions
appear. Is the mother sure she has not had chicken pox? For about half the
price of one shot (at public health cost, $45, and she will need two
injections)she could have a titer done to be sure she needs to be immunized.
