Congratulations on your new grandbabies! It sounds like things are off to a great start. It is wonderful that they are feeding well at the breast and gaining so quickly. This is really the most important battle getting started with twins. As for being exhausted, it absolutely comes with the territory. However, the engorgement is obviously an issue to be dealt with as quickly as possible. It sounds like these are two terrific, attached babies who know how to get the closeness they want. The thoughts that come to my mind in easing the engorgement related to the constantly attached problem, is to begin to give the babies opportunities to have closeness with Dad and other important people (such as yourself if you are nearby). Skin-to-skin with Dad, and slings can mimic the closeness they get with mom. This may take time, as you will need to gently end a nursing session after one or both babies are done with nutritive sucking. If both Dad and another support person can help at the same time, each taking a baby, mom could get a nap, shower, or bath to help with exhaustion. It may also be easier to move each baby at the end of a nursing session if the babies are mostly nursed separately for a week or two until the engorgement issue is resolved. Also nursing There may be a fair amount of crying with two babies. There is a real balancing act with multiples in terms of baby A's needs, baby B's need, mother's needs and father's needs. I hope some of this helps, I have to get running.
