Another learning device using jars...
I found an activity posted on line that reaches a different conclusion:
Fill a jar with rocks. Is it full? No, because you can put stones in. Is
it full? No, because you can put gravel in. Is it full? No, because you
can put sand in. Conclusion? No, not that you can always fit more into
your day, but that you have to put the "important" or "big" things in
first.
We had an interesting meeting that focussed on how bf was more important
than all of the other things people tried to put into their day. So it
does depend on how full you see your jar as being, and how what it is
filled with.
Still, I really like Diane's analogy. During that newborn period when
babies sleep and nurse comfortably in a sling all day, and nurse and
snooze all night, I was often struck by how little I knew about their
"schedule". It really bugged me when I counted how many times they woke
up (to fill out a hospital chart or something) not just because I
wondered why they nursed so often but because I had to wake up to count!
