Both major pump companies supply pumps based on the amount of product
purchased to be given to patients. This is for pumps that stay in the
hospital and are used in the unit. Rental pumps are leased from the company -
thus - SOMEONE pays for them. I managed a program where we used grant money
to pay a one year lease on portable rental pumps, which were then "leased" to
the NICU moms. I usually got a $20 deposit which was given back when the pump
was returned. When I was the manager of this program, only one pump was lost.
This program was for women who were low income & minority living in the inner
city in Chicago.
I do understand how it can be upsetting (been there done that) but use
your energy to get results. Ask the pump companies how you can get rental
pumps at the lowest possible cost? Do they still take a pre-paid lease? Can
you get grant money from a large local business, women's organization
(Business & Professional Women), Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, Chamber of
Commerce or March of Dimes? Local Drs? Can you send these ladies to WIC to
get a pump, while you give them the kit? How about buying pedal pumps?
They've worked for some women?
Good Luck,
