One of the best sources that I've found- and it's DIRT CHEAP, is flax
seed. From what I've read, it's less bioavailable whole so it's best to
grind it up in a coffee grinder. I grind a whole bunch at once and then
stick it in the fridge or freezer to maintain freshness. You can get a
nice sized container for less than a dollar. One or two tablespoons a day
is what Dr. Andrew Weil recommends. It has a pleasant nutty taste and
works well on oatmeal and salads and probably loads of other things. Dr.
Weil doesn't recommend taking the oil because very frequently it sits on
the store shelf and is rancid. I personally have issues with salmon
because much of it is contaminated with mercury now. One has to always
weigh the risk/ benefit in these matters and I suppose it's a personal
comfort issue. As far as protein, the best thing I've found to recommend
to busy mothers is that they carry around almonds with them. They are
easy to grab a handful of and take no preparation. But I also recommend
that they store them in either the freezer or fridge because rancid oils
are VERY unhealthy and they can begin getting rancid before people notice
it in the taste.
