Here comes a quickie 3-in-1 post:

Breast refusal in 3 mo old: Explore mastitis and/or abscess. The ultrasound is wise, and if inconclusive, the mammogram is reasonable to do.
Salty taste is not uncommon in mastitis possibly due to beginning involution due to milk stasis. Do a thorough history including prior nipple trauma, 
baby favoring other side, ineffective feeding, inappropriate pump brand or inappropriate pump use (overstimulating or lack of milk removal), long 
intervals between feeds or expressing, clothing/bra misfit, sleeping on affected breast for long periods, plugged duct, etc. 
Breast refusal has been reported in a cancerous breast, so this needs to be considered, however the above scenario seems more likely to me.

Policy for near term infant - the Academy of Bf Medicine has this covered - excellent policy with refs - and of course from a very credible group!

Sex of baby and different milk - I have never seen, nor read, about this, nor heard talk of it at any conference. Their is a reported difference in weight 
gains between boy and girl babies, in general, the boys gain a little more per week than the girls. Perhaps someone was theorizing about that.
