Dear Henya and all,

Sorry, I am wayyyy behind in my e-mails, so I am late in responding to
this.

It is my opinion that most pharmacists just don't know where to look for
proper breastfeeding-drug information. There is some very limited (and
usually incorrect) data in the prescribing information that comes with
the medication (this data may not be revised after the drug is approved
by the FDA), and most of the drug information databases that we
pharmacists use have that incorrect jibberish from the manufacturer, who
is trying to cover their rear-end, rather than to promote breastfeeding.
I have never met another pharmacist with an interest in this, and when
unable to find information on something, we tend to advise not to do it.

I was fortunate to have a very forward-thinking teacher in my drug
information education, who taught me to use Briggs et al. Drugs in
Pregnancy and Lactation, to answer such questions. No one every
mentioned the Hale book to me until I got interested in lactation. And
the Lactmed database online is just heavenly.

You bring up an important point: here I live local to a large pharmacy
school that graduates about 130 pharamcists a year, and that wonderful
drug information instructor has just retired. Maybe I should volunteer
to teach a day once a year about drugs in pregnancy and lactation.

Thank you,

Laura Block, PharmD

Thank you all for very prompt response. I am sorry that I am not as
prompt with my thanks , but I was on my way out of town and than life
was very hectic for a few days. My husband has passed his citizenship
test today, so hopefully things will start slowing down. The mother was
very happy to hear your responses and went ahead taking the medication
and nursing. I just wanted to ask why is it that pharmacists are so
adamant about almost any medication being not compatible with nursing?
Is it the liability issues? Or formula is seen as a familiar
pharmacological compound mindset?
