June, I used to think this too, but lactose is actually constant throughout
the feed at 7.0 g/dl.
Whereas *fat* content is variable. Lower at start of feed, and in the
morning feeds, higher in an 'empty' breast etc.
It is the higher fat content of hindmilk that slows gut transit time,
allowing time for more thorough digestion of the lactose, as I understand
it.
Just clarifying things.....
