On pages 4 & 5 of the above Fall 2006 issue (Vol 107) of Lifeline there is a
story of a 25 year old nursing pregnant mother, Gina LaPapa, who was finally
diagnosed with Paget's disease of the nipple and areola. She was 8 months
pregnant and still breastfeeding her first child when her nipples began to
crack and bleed and she knew it was not due to breastfeeding. Two breast
specialists told her not to worry. One office dropped her because she would
not wean. But her family doctor who had been a breast surgeon knew it was
Paget's and a biopsy confirmed it. She had a mastectomy and reconstructive
surgery and continued to breastfeed her second daughter until she was 2-1/2.
She had another pregnancy and is still breastfeeding her son born in 2005.
This is a very compelling story that turned out well.

In our business, we have fit two young moms who have had a unilateral
mastectomy with a breastfeeding bra we have pocketed on the prosthesis side.
They loved it.
