I am not familiar with the research on this, but I don't understand the argument that "smart placentas" don't let fluid in to the baby in such a way that their weight loss would be affected after the birth. I am old enough to remember that it used to be thought that placentas were smart enough to filter out medications and alcohol, too. Placentas are amazing and they are indeed very smart but they are porous and if we pump a laboring woman with fluid for many hours, some fraction of that fluid will reach the baby. When we are pregnant we want the fluids and nutrients we take in to reach the baby. I guess that our bodies, which have been evolving and developing smarts for a very very long haven't yet caught up with modern science and the need to fill moms with fluids through IVs during labor.

With all due respect to Trish's doctor, I think the situation is the other way around. Until we have some really good reason to give women many times the amount of fluid they could possibly consume in the few hours of labor, we should not be giving IV fluids in labor.

Ok I'm done ranting now.

Naomi
