Because it appears to be a minority of women who are adversely affected by
early administration of depo provera, a solution, which I think Hale has
suggested, is to only give it to women who have either had it before or
taken the oral progestin-only contraceptive before and NOT experienced a
drop in milk supply. Those who have never had either before should be
given the progestin-only pill initially, which can be quickly withdrawn if
problems occur, and the injection later when her milk supply is well
established.
If a woman must have a hormonal contraceptive this sounds like a good
solution to me.
