Hi Linda,
I don't know if the steroids had any effect on lactogenesis, altho it is
possible. What I am thinking is that *possibly* the disease process of
multiple sclerosis (MS) with de-myelinization basically of the nerve fibers
could affect the nerve pathways involved in lactation. My other thoughts
would be what other factors could be contributory: induction of labor? Is
baby few weeks early? C-section birth? Any delay in initiation?
Any separation of mom/baby? Any other medications such as contraception,
over the counter cold or sinus meds, allergy meds?
I actually would recommend immediate start of galactagogues, herbal or
prescription, if not otherwise contraindicated for her. I also would ask
mother to consider a lactation aid at breast, if she is now bottle feeding
the supplements. And if mother can manage, I would ask her to express or
pump, even if briefly, after as many feeds as she can.
In my experience, under the circumstances you describe, baby usually begins
refusing the breast. Over time the milk production could come up with
continued frequent bf, but I would be afraid baby would soon be refusing.
I'm glad he is still bf for now.
