The Monell Chemical Senses Center is right here in Phila. I have had the
privilege of hearing Julia Mennella speak about the research she has done
with infants and flavors in breastmilk. She's a wonderful speaker and the
research is fascinating. Not only does the garlic flavor pass into the
breastmilk, but it also passes into the amniotic fluid! Babies are already
experiencing many different flavors before they are born. You have to feel
sorry for babies receiving ABM - the same boring flavor 6 times a day, 7 days
a week, month after month. Babies who are accustomed to different flavors in
breastmilk do better with the transition to table food.
