Just offering a thought on pain relief - instead of a systemic med, why not use a drop of OraGel or Numzit placed with a cotton swab like a Qtip for good aim? It's temporary, but can give enough relief to help baby nurse again and go to sleep, as it does for teething babies.

I am wondering what others recommend to moms whose newborn babies are having a frenotomy. Some babies do not seem to be bothered much and some seem to have a lot of pain after the procedure and during the stretches and sweeps to prevent reattachment.

If the baby is older, then the parents can choose to use ibuprofen or acetaminophen but what about newborns?

Also, there appears to be a lot of variation in the recommended stretches for preventing reattachment. Some very experienced frenotomy providers believe that lifting and massaging the frenotomy sites a few times a day is critical and others advise sweeping under the tongue and massage, several times a day.

Is there some concensus as to what is the best aftercare?
