Dear Lactnetters,
a 4 month-old girl has had uncomplicated surgery for esophageal atresia (e.a.) a few wks ago. Mom is currently breastfeeding exclusively, baby is thriving and both doing perfectly well. Surgeon recently advised strongly to introduce solid foods in order to primarily prevent strictures. I could not find any evidence-based literature on this issue and advocated to ensure mom to continue exclusive bf. I think that a proven substantial benefit for the child would be required to justify such an intervention. So does anybody have reliable figures (or at least personal experiences) about the prohylactic effect of solid foods for secondary strictures in post-op e.a. patients? Do the benefits outweigh the disadvantages of (at least partial) weaning at 4 mo? Does anybody have an algorithm for post-op nutrition management in e.a. patients? Any opinion would be appreciated !
Thanks and greetings from Munich, Germany
