Amy,
I went back and reread all of the posts on this baby. Almost every mother I see with severe nipple pain has been told by someone in hospital that her latch was "fine"--including by poorly educated IBCLCs. OTOH, sometimes there is no pain in the first couple of days and the latch "appears" fine in babies who have TT's. Everything you describe is consistent with a posterior TT, including the fact that is continues to get worse with time. The gagging on breast or bottle, the slow weight gain, the "reflux"--which is a symptom and not a diagnosis!!!, the nipple damage leading to thrush, the gut issues that get worse and worse--all consistent with TT. THis kid needs an eval for posterior TT, to be seen by a pedi chiropractor or CST and I would really consider both dairy and gluten elimination until there is a more clear picture. Because the other possibility that leaps out is celiac disease.

Subject: 8 week old w/ GI probs worse

Hi all,

Here's an update on the 8 week old with suspected GI problems:

A series of tests (ultrasound, barium swallow, xrays) were done and ruled out
pyloric stenosis, malrotation, & esophogeal stricture. Mom still has
appointment at 10am today w/ pedi GI specialist.

Mom has begun using her PIS every 3 hours around the clock (one 4 hour stretch
at night), in addition to using Motherlove's More Milk Plus, in her efforts to
relactate. She got 3ml the first time she pumped, which was enough to really
make her feel good about doing it. All milk is going directly to the baby.

Last night after a feeding, baby had one of his "usual" choking episodes, except
that he went blue around the lips and became limp. Mom performed heimlich
maneuver (?? not sure why).

Mom & Dad took baby to the ER on the advice of their pedi. ER doc did an RSV
test to rule out congestion as part of the problem; it was negative. ER doc
advised that perhaps baby's problem is not GI, but cardiac. He said that most
babies with cardio problems experience Failure To Thrive by this time, but this
baby has not. He has been on the consistently low side of the growth chart (not
sure which they're using to track him): 3rd percentile at 1 month, 5th at 2
months."
