Dear Friends:
Such a hard word to use; I would hate to hear it. I would be angry if
someone referred to the birth of my last daughter as a 'failed homebirth.'
Maternity care seems to be the major place that it is used, which is a
big reason it galls me. I fight that notion of 'failure' in female functions. I
worked on a male GU (genitourinary) unit; never took care of any man with
'failed' urination or 'erectile failure' or 'prostate failure'.
If we are technically accurate, perhaps we should refer to 'system
failure' with all the inductions/augmentations/cesarean sections. I did read
somewhere once about a reason for that being
'physician failure to wait'.
Why do we need to use this word?
     warmly,
