Anyone else here on Lactnet get the "Parade" supplement with their Sunday
paper? "Parade" apparently is a nationally distributed magazine
supplement to newspapers across the US. In today's issue (Feb. 8), the
"Health on Parade" section focuses on "Before the next epidemic strikes"
(about bacterial and viral epidemics, treatments, prevention, etc.). A
sidebar box is entitled "More breast-feeding (sic) may make stronger
students" and is accompanied by a color photo of a nursing couple.
Surprisingly, this comment focuses on the "cognitive and academic"
achievements of breastfed children. While I am pleased that a mainstream
mag would discuss this issue, of the gazillions of reasons to breastfeed
dealing with disease prevention, life and death issues, etc., why focus
on intelligence instead of lifesaving reasons? I guess beggars can't be
choosers.
