Received today from an OB friend and article which recently appeared in J
Maternal-Fetal Medicine 4:252-6 (1995) entitled :Early Discharge of
Breastfed Infants-A Potential Dangerous Combination" Authore Saslo, Pride
and Imiazumi. Details the cases of 7 infants re-admitted agter 24hr
discharge and POOR breastfeeding follow-up. Certainly shows the need for
post-partum teaching and EARLY follow-up. Authors used very old references
which surprised me- 70s and 80s mostly, and ,as many do, confuse
educational status with familiarity with infants and infant behaviors.
Seems to mt that the more years spent in college, the farther away from
babies people get. At any rate, articles like this keep us on our
toes. The brief cases reviewed point to gross errors in management, so we
can all learn from it too. Anne Andrianos, MSN, IBCLC, LLL
