Dear Friends:
The International Childbirth Education Association adopted ILCA's
position paper on infant feeding a number of years ago. One of the points in
that position paper (Number 43) is that "ICEA believes that the International
Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes is an essential minimum basis for
assessing industry marketing practice, and should be supported by all
governments which claim to encourage breastfeeding."
Recently, ICEA has linked up with Impact Media to produce materials for
use in childbirth classes. These materials advertise bottles and teats, with
no warning of the risks or possible negative impact on breastfeeding.
Today, ICEA is straddling the fence. On one hand, they support and
endorse the WHO Code. On the other hand, they support and endorse marketing
that violates that Code. The ICEA Board of Directors needs to appreciate the
seriousness of this contradiction.

Warmly, with great concern, Nikki Lee
