  thanks for your suggestions.
  According to mom the nipple just looks like that, it is no new situation (I am aware that it could be very serious if it was a newly developed appearance). It looks to me it could be a result of trauma - but mom says she never had trauma, problems or surgery on her breasts.
  I suggested unilateral nursing too because she is so frustrated with all the pain - it was a very new idea to her and she has some doubts wether there will be sufficient milk for the baby (of course there will be, she has quite an abundant milk supply despite for nursing only 5 times in 24 hours and baby sleeping 8-10 hour stretches in the night), but that sertainly is a possibility for her. Still she wants to know she had tried every other measure before deciding for nursing only on one side.
