I just watched Reading Rainbow with my 6 year old daughter (breastfed 13
months). It was a special edition of R.R. - including a special on-screen,
written introduction explaining to parents that the episode was entitled
"The Day You Were Born," and that it would deal with the subject of birth
including video of an actual birth. Next, we see Lavar Burton in a nursery
holding a newborn baby - feeding it from a bottle (ARGH!!!) This was the
first of four occurances of visual representations of the feeding of babies
- all of them bottle feeding - NONE of them breastfeeding. The second
visual occurance was the longest (and most disgusting). It showed older
siblings in an older siblings class being taught how to - you guessed it -
bottle feed. While the show got off to a less than great start from my
point of view, I thought, "Well, I can hope for the old 'equal time' salvo
and waited patiently for information about breastfeeding. It never came.
As soon as I post this note, I'm going to the PBS web site to see if I can
post my comments there. If any of you saw this episode of Reading Rainbow,
I encourage you to so the same.
