Few years ago I worked with a mother(have her permission to post), who
answered that question herself. She was in her 20th,one of 10 kids(she is
Jewish orthodox);her mother and most of her sisters had history of low supply.
She delivered 4th baby,a girl,after 3 boys. I noticed wide spaced breasts,but
there was no history of PCOS,infertility, thyroid, etc. She tried to nurse her
boys, first was hospitalized with dehydration, she started to supplement others
right away, and was done with nursing in few weeks. "You do not
understand",she told me,"I don't make any milk" She did everything by the
book with this one, skin to skin after birth, nursing every hour, pumping with
hospital grade pump. Weight check before and after:0cc. We added herbs,SNS
(she refused medications). After weeks and weeks we had 8cc of transfered
breast milk, then 16cc. I was looking for those words to say. She looked at me
and said,"She got WHOLE 16 grams from me! I know it is not enough. I know
she needs the supplement. But I love nursing her,it comforts her,she falls
asleep at my breast. I think, more then with milk,I nurse her with my love and
faith. Is that ok to continue?" What else could I tell her,she had
my "permission",praise and support. She did it for 5 months. She told me later,
with a smile, that one of her sisters developed full supply by her 9th baby and
nursed all 15 kids. She will have more kids, she will nurse again. That was a
lesson of faith, love and encouragement. In my book-a success story!
