Dear Wise ones,
I have been trying to keep up with the posts regarding 24-48 hrs after birth
what is expected. I work during the day Monday -Friday. Alot of our babies
are born during the night. If they have had 2-4 good feedings since birth, I try
to encourage mom to give baby drops of expressed colostrum every 2-3 hrs
during the day until he wakens enough to feed. I also encourage alot of skin
to skin the first 24 hrs. Some moms will some won't and I see visitors holding a
baby wrapped in a blanket with the hat on. Mom's say that when she puts the
baby to breast he just falls asleep. Some times it works the way I wish and
sometimes not. My biggest struggle is if baby has lost too much weight over
8% in 24 hrs and mom's milk is'nt in. The staff and physicians will order
supplementation. If I'm here I try to have it be mom's milk. Anymore input out
there?
