Hale's 2000 edition lists Ampicillin as category L1 "safest" and Gentamicin
as L2 "safer" choices for breastfeeding moms, even though the AAP has not
made a review of them. Clindamycin is listed as L3 "moderately safe" and
has AAP approval for breastfeeding mothers.

Ampicillin and Gentamicin are widely used in pediatrics, even in neonates
and premature infants and antibiotics that can be given directly to infants
should be fine for breastfeeding moms.

Subject: Gram positive coccy and antibiotics

Hello there,=20
My first time asking for help on line, looking for a quick response
I'm a hospital based LC and have a pt readmitted post c-section
diagnosis of endometritis, growing positive gram coccy and being treated
with Gentamicin, Ampicillin, and Clindamycin. Gent and Amp not reviewed
according to Hale's med book, mom wants to cont. with pumping and
nursing. Looking to see if this will cause ill effects to infant?? Mom
is still running temps.
Thanks for your responses
