Just a question, Is the baby being exclusively breastfed or is the baby also
getting infant formula or water? Often I made the assumption that a baby was
being exclusively breastfed and often mothers would say that the baby was
exclusively breastfed. But it depends on who is defining it. So, a baby may
in fact be getting other things besides breastmilk which maybe the cause of
the problem. Not too many babies in the US are exclusively breastfed.

I also think mothers can end up with an infant in far worse shape because
they or the HCP decides that breastmilk is the problem. Instead of a having
a fussy baby, they end up with a baby crying for hours on end. I had this
happen to a mom I worked with who thought the situation could not get any
worse. It did. It got alot worse.

Mothers are told to wean for the oddest reasons. We are harassed when we
don't wean. It's a miracle any of us breastfeed our babies for any length of
time because there seems to be 1001 reasons why the rest of society wants us
to quit. Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
