From: "Jenny Thomas, MD, IBCLC"<She left after the third consecutive speaker
decided to call doctors some variation on stupid.>

Exactly. Doctors are not stupid. And they mean well. They simply don't
know, and don't know that they don't know.

I think their resistance to finding out has natural unconscious reasons, not
deliberate antipathy. And that should help us understand and accept them
where they are. We have no right to assume they are trying to sabotage
breastfeeding deliberately. We have to strategise to overcome this
unconscious resistance. Diane shared her experience with effective ways of
teaching doctors in a non-agressive way.

From Diane Wiessinger, MS, IBCLC <<our local coalition put together mass
mailings (including all pertinent area HCPs from pharmacists to
dermatologists, depending) on topics that *a few* area physicians were
seriously, um, uninformed about. Everyone got the same information, no one
was targeted, and perhaps a few of the papers didn't end up in waste
baskets. All I can say for sure is that the issues we did mailings on back
then - thrush and antidepressants - don't seem to be local issues any more.

It might also be possible - though we didn't do it - to follow up with a
note to the same people as needed saying, "Mothers' experiences indicate
that there are still one or more offices that are unaware of the AAP's
official position on XX. We urge you to visit (website), to review the
policy and the supporting research" or something like that. >>
