I am with the poster who was concerned about blankets over baby's heads. I
see them all the time in our cold Indiana winter climate, and even see light
blankets (to filter the sun?) in warmer temperatures. I am amazed that
parents don't consider how risky this is. I think about how I can't stand
to have covers over my head for more than a few seconds. The air gets warm
and moist and I feel like I'm suffocating! This can't be good for babies.
But, I also think it's an extension of the current social climate of babies
being packages instead of people. We can leave them sitting in the same
position for hours, where we carry them at knee level instead of eye level
and put rockers on their carseats and plug in pacifiers to keep from hearing
a peep out of them or having to -God forbid- take them out of their seat and
interact with them! Covering them with a blanket makes them virtually
invisible. How ingenious! ...It scares me to think what effect this might
have on kids (can you say "disconnected"?!)
