My understanding is that congenital lactose intolerance is very rare. But
these days I always seem to be coming across people who claim to have this
condition. We have one staying with us at the moment. This person can't
tolerate some dairy products eg milk and hard cheese, but somehow they can
tolerate others eg ice-cream, custard, chocolate, soft cheese.

One thing that I have noticed related to my own personal experience with milk
intolerance is the amount of milk ingested related to other foods ingested
recently. If dairy products are taken on an empty stomach, loose stools &
flatus occur within 30 minutes. However, if I have a milk shake with dinner
after eating regular meals during the day, it's just a gassy problem a little
later. (I hope this isn't more information than you wanted.) So, in my case
it definately seems to be a dose-related problem.
